When tech companies whose revenue is IT generated, set up IT development and service centers in countries like India, they are called captive centers. Examples include Target Corp, Walmart, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and JCPenney.
Tech captives are companies that have established captive centers, capability centers, or outsourcing centers in India. These companies initially come to India or start here as tech captives. After that, they put people in engineering or data sciences together to make shared services and launch the tech captives. Then gradually expand their operations to other departments.

Tech captives primarily concentrate on areas such as cloud, engineering, automation, software development, and testing. They build engineering teams and shared services to support these functions. Once they have matured as tech captives, they consider extending shared services to other departments like marketing, sales, legal, and human resources.
To initiate conversations with tech captives, two potential topics of discussion are helping them acquire the right talent and engaging the new generation to foster long-term retention. These are the key challenges they often face in their operations. By addressing these aspects, you can provide valuable assistance to tech captives.
Tech biggies like Salesforce or Deloitte have separate verticals for GCCs as it takes longer to build relationships with the stakeholders. It’s also challenging to foster relationships as decision makers are sometimes in India and sometimes outside, depending on the type of GCC.
